Happy Birthday Scott! Transplant complete.

Thank you for all the messages/emails/calls over the last couple days to check in on transplant status. I am happy to report that yesterday was Scott’s new “birthday” as he received Jeff’s stem cells which will soon become his new immune system. Essentially starting again like a newborn baby.

Many people think the transplant involves a surgery (which makes sense given that “transplant” often refers to organs which require surgery), but a Stem Cell Transplant is different in that the donor cells are transfused through Scott’s Hickman Catheter. The infusion process is pretty anticlimactic, and involves a lot of monitoring (vitals taken every 15 mins for hours) to make sure while the new cells are coming in that his body isn’t fighting them off. He experienced a fever and really bad rigors after the process was complete, but that was expected and treated. I’d say for about an hour and a half Scott was really uncomfortable and feeling unwell. Once the morphine kicked in, he stopped shaking but did develop a fever which continued through the night. This meant a pretty restless “sleep”.

He is currently completely wiped out, with empty bone marrow, waiting for those new cells to find their way to the marrow and start working their magic. This can take 2-3 weeks and in the meantime Scott is vulnerable to infection and really not feeling well at all. He is sleeping now, thanks again to the “Bunnydryl”, and hopefully catching up on needed rest.

I wish he could just sleep through the next few weeks and wake up on the other side, without having to deal with what’s to come. Doesn’t help that his beloved sports are on hiatus… I don’t think he knows that the Masters have been postponed yet….because that usually offers a good distraction.

That said, any suggestions for must-watch TV shows or movies? We have Netflix, Prime and Apple TV – so please, share your favourites!
