Day 7

If you’re looking for Scott he is now comfortably set up in room 26, progressing through his last bag of induction chemo, which will be done mid afternoon.

He’s been in hospital for 13 days now, and its hard to believe it’s been that brief. So much has happened, so quickly, and as he nears the completion of this initial treatment the question on our minds is “what next?”.

Once he is unplugged from Betsy, the nurses will make sure Scott’s fever stays down and that he avoids infection. His counts will continue to fluctuate, but they will monitor everything closely and make sure he is as comfortable as possible. Right now this involves treating some heartburn, nausea etc.

Ideally, nothing “exciting” happens until day 14 (7 days from now) when the doctor takes another bone marrow biopsy to see the effects induction chemo has had on his cancer. This will be when they see that chemo has kicked leaukemia’s ass and Scott is in remission.

On this journey so far there have been some frightening “firsts”, but Scott has come through them all so well. First marrow biopsy: check. First transfusion: check. First round of chemo: check. Though he is making it all look easy, it is anything but. This is such a mental process, and forgetting for a moment the immense physical stress his body is under, how he keeps his head in the game is a feat of its own.

So the answer to ‘what next?’ is that we wait. And when my special guy wants his apples cut in quarters, he gets his apple cut in quarters.

  1. We check in every day to see how the patient is doing. A special thank you for setting this up.
Marnie and I are cheering for you all the way!
I am only guessing that Scott may be watching the Dolphin game tonight.

Happy to hear that Betsy is about to take a break.

Keep smiling Scott. I see a golf game in our future and I will even buy the beer.
