Round 2.

So the party may need to be delayed for a bit…

It was confirmed today that the blast cells that were detected in his biopsy sample last week were indeed lukaemia cells. Scott’s first round of chemo was not successful in getting rid of his cancer, and therefore he will need to undergo a round of “reinduction” chemo to put him into remission. So unfortunately he’s heading back up the mountain for another 4-6 week stay with his friends at Juravinski.

Though he is technically still intermediate risk, (based on cytogenetic info we already have) the fact that the disease has been resistant to treatment, tells us that a marrow transplant will be necessary. Because of this, the molecular info we were waiting on is now moot.

For those who find comfort in statistics, Scott falls in the group of 40% of similar patients that require reinduction. Juravinski as a cancer centre is more agressive in treatment, particularly with young, healthy patients that will withstand stronger therapies.

Obviously this is crappy news. There is no denying we all wanted Scott to be in the ‘best case scenario’ group that reaches remission after induction, and that he wouldn’t need a transplant. But for us, transplant isn’t as scary today as it first sounded on Dec 1. It would mean a much higher likelihood of staying cancer free once all this is done, which is definitely comforting at this time.

Scott will likely be going back in sometime tomorrow – just waiting on a bed.
